Gavin Harrison says in an interview for musicalmind:
“This project is different from the last one [‘Chemical Reactions’]. […] For ‘Perpetual Mutations’ we decided to use some other instrumentation. So, we have saxophone, trombone, cello, handpan, violin, oboe, vibraphone, and marimba (as well as piano, bass and drums of course). It is always based around Antoine’s compositions and so we just try to find the best way to present them. [He] writes a lot of odd-time signatures and interesting rhythmical challenges. I know that he works with some really great drummers. The fact that he chooses a specific drummer for a project and writes songs that would suit this drummer is a very interesting approach. I like his compositions. I like the way he structures his rhythms. Sometimes, it’s not only in one-time signature, but it might be in several time signatures. This can present good creative opportunities on the drums. It is a bit of a blank canvas, and you can really do anything you want.“
