New King Crimson spin-off project featuring Danny Carey on drums

King Crimson guitarist and vocalist in the 1980s, Adrian Belew, joins forces with bassist Tony Levin (member of King Crimson from 1981 until the group disbanded) and legendary guitarist Steve Vai.

The result is a band called BEAT, which will perform King Crimson repertoire from the 1980s.

King Crimson’s founder and leader, Robert Fripp, has written on his social media:

“This is the project that Adrian Belew called me about last Autumn, a project which I support and fully encourage, and discussed with Steve Vai recently at McCabes in Santa Monica (3 march 2024). Even, I suggested the name.“

“At the recent Englishmen Abroad presentation, McCabes of Santa Monica, Steve Vai asked me what I thought when Adrian Belew told me Steve would be the guitarist. My reply: Steve Vai is the only guitarist who could play my parts.”

There is, of course, the question of who will play the drum parts written by Bill Bruford, who has retired from touring and recording. That drummer will be Danny Carey himself, best known for his work with Tool, but who has also collaborated with such artists as Zaum, Green Jellÿ, Pigface, Skinny Puppy, Adrian Belew, Carole King, Collide, Meat Puppets, Lusk, and The Melvins.
