As we reported in the fall of last year, bassist, vocalist, and keyboardist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson had decided to reactivate Rush. The sensational news was that Anika Nilles, known to most drum maniacs around the world, took the late Neil Peart‘s place behind the drums.
Last night marked Anika’s live debut with Rush. It took place during the Junos, the Canadian music industry’s award ceremony. The band, backed by keyboardist Loren Gold, opened the ceremony with a surprise performance, during which they played track one from their debut album (released in 1974), titled “Finding My Way.”
This selection was certainly no accident, as it seems to perfectly capture the band’s situation following the death of its longtime drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart. It is worth noting that the band’s late co-founder and first drummer, John Rutsey, participated in the recording of the track (as well as the entire debut album). This means Rush have come full circle – they paid a tribute to the deceased drummers, performed the song that was step one the band’s triumphant artistic journey, and the new lineup marked the beginning of a new chapter.
