During Silesia Drum Festival in w Chorzów, Poland, we had the opportunity to interview the artists who performed on stage that day.
Today, we present to you the first part of our conversation with the main attraction of the event, Benny Greb.
Benny told us his general opinion on drum festivals.
BeatIt: Silesia Drum Festival 2023, Benny Greb. We’re catching up with you before your performance. Let’s start with events like this. What do you think is the most important thing you’d like to convey to those who attend such events or how does it differ from a drum camp or a workshop?
Benny Greb: I love drum festivals. If it’s really good, and if I have a good day and everything goes as planned (it doesn’t always), I would love for it to be good music, I would like to give a good musical performance. Second, I like it to be entertaining, maybe silly, maybe funny. Third, I like it to be educational or motivational so, hopefully, when people go home, I’ve helped them with something. Again, I don’t always accomplish that but I aim for it and these would be the three things that make a drum festival amazing for me and can almost make them better than a concert, if that stuff happens. Because you may get a good show, good entertainment, good music at a concert, but you may not necessarily learn anything. With lessons, you may learn something, may get entertained, but not get a concert vibe.
BeatIt: But you can go in-depth at a lesson.
Benny Greb: Drum camps are great if you really have a focussed, immersive time. The drum camps that I do are very tense. They last, like, a couple of days and people are really turned upside down afterwards, and they enjoy it, usually. I mean, I try to pack some music into that as well but these are the three things that I really like and I hope this will happen today.
