During last Sunday’s (February 11, 2024) Super Bowl, the Usher paid a touching tribute to one of his longtime band members, who sadly passed away last year. The performance at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium, given to the sound of Usher’s greatest hits, featured the band playing live with two drum kits onstage. More perceptive spectators may have noticed that one of the sets – the gold one – was left empty in tribute to the star’s longtime drummer, Aaron Spears, who died in October 2023 at the age of 47 (see: HERE).
The Rolling Stone magazine has confirmed that the empty set was a tribute to Spears, a beloved drummer who worked with Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus and who was nominated for a Grammy for producing Usher‘s 2004 album “Confessions“.
The sad news of Aaron Spears’ passing was announced by Aaron’s widow, Jessica, on his social media. The statement read:
“It is with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that I share the news of the passing of my beloved husband, Aaron Spears. Aaron was not only an incredibly accomplished drummer, admired by many for his unparalleled talent and passion for music, but he was also a devoted father to our precious son, August. His love, guidance and warmth were the pillars of our family, and his absence leaves a void that worlds cannot describe. We were blessed to have him in our life, and his legacy will live on through the beautiful rhythms he created and the love he shared with us. We appreciate all the thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please remember Aaron for the incredible person he was and the amazing music he brought into our world. At this time we ask for privacy as we work our way through this. With love, Jessica and August.”
