As we informed two months ago, Styx drummer and in-demand session musician, Todd Sucherman, has become a SONOR artist.
Yesterday, SONOR put up a video of Todd working with the company on designing his SQ2 Heavy Beech drum kit. In it, he says:
Upon the initial idea of designing this drum set, I knew that Heavy Beech was going to be the shell choice because it’s the classic Sonor sound. It’s the sound, the physical way the drums respond, that captivated my heart and my ears since childhood. I wanted to return to that. And I like the traditional sizes for the toms because they just respond immediately. It’s like a richer, darker chocolate or a more moist chocolate cake. You think, ‘How can there be so much moisture in a chocolate? How can there be this much sound and thunder and power but yet a beautiful, musical sound [and] tones?’. It’s a musical instrument. They’re not just things to hit. Using Remo Ambassadors, top and bottom, it’s the most highs, the most mids, the most lows, the most sustain you can get from a drum head; and matching those with these drums – they’re unstoppable. Now, you can always take tone away [but] you can’t add it if it’s not there in the first place. And it’s there in the first place in spate. Even with a pillow in the bass drum, you hear the boom, you get the spike, but then you hear the woof and the round, warm low end. I’m beyond thrilled. This is such a joy to play. And every time we started messing round with things and I would play, I didn’t want to stop playing. That’s when I really know that something has captivated me.
Todd Sucherman studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He has been playing live and recording with Styx since 1995 r. He has also worked with such artists as Brian Wilson, Peter Cetera, Spinal Tap, or Tommy Shaw. The drummer laso has a solo album under his belt, titled “Last Flight Home“. In 2009, Modern Drummer Magazine voted him number one Rock Drummer in the World. In 2020, Modern Drummer readers voted him number one Live drummer. In 2021, Music Radar nominated him for Best Rock drummer.
