Simon Phillips is a drummer who needs no introduction to drum manics around the world. Among other things, his standing in the industry is evidenced by the number of signature snare drums have been included in Tama‘s product line over the years. To date, there have been as many as four: ‘The Pageant’, ‘The Gladiator’, ‘The Monarch’ and an instrument created to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary.
This year, the company launched another instrument created in collaboration with this outstanding musician, sound engineer and producer. It is a mahogany snare drum, advertised by the manufacturer as having a ‘a deeply rich, warm tone, crisp attack and Steel Sensitive snare wires to capture Simon’s intricate playing with precision.’

Simon Phillips says: “I heard that Tama were making a Mahogany snare drum, I played it last year in Nagoya and I really loved the sound and the tone of it. Maybe Peter Erskine mentioned it, I can’t remember. I thought, ‘Oooh! We’re looking for a new signature snare drum. Maybe we should try Mahogany.’ I do love green, it’s one of my favourite colours. All my second generation Starclassic kits were British Racing Green. I would say if you want something a little bit different, try this out!”
