The news of the musician’s illness was shared by his mother on Facebook on Christmas Day as she revealed that Green had been diagnosed with stage four cancer.

Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock confirmed the news six days ago saying Green had started his treatment. However, on the 1st of January the band told fans in a post to Instagram:

I don’t know a way to ease into this: Today we lost our dear friend
Jeremiah. He laid down to rest and simply faded out. I’d like to say a bunch of pretty words right now, but it just isn’t the time. These will come later, and from many people. Please appreciate all the love you give, get, have given, and will get. Above all, Jeremiah was about love. We love you.

Jeremiah Green co-founded Modest Mouse with Isaac Brock and bassist Eric Judy in 1993. He quit the band ten years later when he suffered a nervous breakdown. He rejoined the group in 2004, but his absence meant he skipped the band’s most acclaimed album titled “Good News For People Who Love Bad News“. He is featured on all other Modest Mouse records.

Green also performed with a number of other artists, including Satisfact, Red Stars Theory, Peeved, Vells, and Psychic Emperor. In 2008, he also released a seven-inch of drum breaks in collaboration with Plastiq Phantom under the alias World Gang.

Johnny Marr of The Smiths’ fame, who joined the band for their 2007 album “We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank“, wrote on Instagram:  “The great Jeremiah Green. My friend, bandmate, and the most creative musician I ever met”.
