> > > Brad Wilk on Maynard James Keenan as RATM singer

Some Tool and Rage Against The Machine fans probably know that guitarists Adam Jones (member of the former band) and Tom Morello (member of the latter) went to the same school and were class mates at Libertyville High School in Libertyville, Illinois. We will add that Mrs. Morello was a teacher there. The result of that fact was that young Tom met the future members of Tool very early on.

However, not so many fans know that those connections caused James Maynard Keenan to front Rage Against The Machine for a brief moment. Here is how RATM drummer, Brad Wilk, remembers that time:

We were also playing with Maynard, Tom and I were jamming with Maynard at this time… He was fucking unbelievable. It was such a great time in music. Maynard was already playing with Tool as well. He might have said, ‘I’m going to go do this thing with Tool.”

Wilk continues: “Zack comes in, I think he had a beanie on. He comes from a total punk-rock background, but is also super into hip-hop. I just remember starting a song, starting to play a beat, and from the second I kicked in with the beat, the dude was like jumping off my fucking drum set. Whatever was happening sonically, musically, everyone was in, like right from the start.”

James Maynard Keenan recalls it in this way: “I was looking for almost a Puscifer approach to music at that point. They were looking for a more serious approach, so I think that breakup was pretty much immediate.”
