The Zildjian L80 Low Volume cymbal series is one that has constantly been put to the test at our drum school and works great during our lessons. This time around, we would like to try out a new addition to this line – the 18″ Zildjian L80 Low Volume China.

Zildjian 18″ Low Volume China

1. Product

The 18″ Zildjian L80 Low Volume China is a new member of the L80 Low Volume family. As we know, the whole idea behind the Low Volume series was to reduce the volume of the cymbals by 80%. Like all L80 cymbals, our new splash also has holes all over the surface except the edge and the top of the bell, which is also holey. There are two perforation zones: the holes are smaller closer to the center while their diameters are larger as we approach the edge, and their location is less frequent.

2. Basic product specification:
  • Manufacturer: Zildjian
  • Series: L80 Low Volume
  • Cymbal type: China
  • Diameter: 18″
  • Material: No information available
  • Finish: Matte
  • Sound: Dark, quiet, short decay

3. Test

We tested the 18″ Zildjian Low Volume China together with other cymbals from the L80 series. We carried out the test in our own recording facility.

4. Summary

The producer claims that the reduction in sound intensity is 80 per cent. Despite the lack of a proper measurement device, we can confidently say that noise reduction is more than significant, both when hitting the edge, the body as well as the bell. The decay is much shorter compared to standard cymbals. Due to a large number of holes, the stick impact seems to be louder than the cymbal itself. Despite the large number of holes, the weight of this cymbal is comparable to a standard cymbal, which is due to a special alloy that, despite reducing the surface of the cymbal, does not reduce its weight to the same extent. People looking for a new sound may also be tempted to use different, unconventional methods of applying this cymbal, for example by using it as an element of a stack.

The 18″ Zildjian Low Volume China is a great-sounding practice cymbal, which is perfect for sonic experiments. The price is not discouraging either. We can wholeheartedly recommend this product…
