The Zildjian L80 Low Volume cymbal series is one that has constantly been put to the test at our drum school and works great during our lessons. This time around, we would like to try out a new addition to this line – the 10″ Zildjian L80 Low Volume Splash.
1. Product

The 10″ Zildjian L80 Low Volume Splash is a new member of the L80 Low Volume family. As we know, the whole idea behind the Low Volume series was to reduce the volume of the cymbals by 80%. Like all L80 cymbals, our new splash also has holes all over the surface except the edge and the top of the bell, which is also holey. There are two perforation zones: the holes are smaller closer to the center while their diameters are larger as we approach the edge, and their location is less frequent.

2. Basic product specification:

  • Manufacturer: Zildjian
  • Series: L80 Low Volume
  • Cymbal type: Splash
  • Material: No information available
  • Finish: Matte
  • Sound: Clear, quiet, short decay

3. Test

We tested the 10″ Zildjian Low Volume Splash together with other cymbals from the L80 series. We carried out the test in our own recording facility.

4. Summary

The producer claims that the reduction in sound intensity is 80 per cent. Despite the lack of a proper measurement device, we can confidently say that noise reduction is more than significant, both when hitting the edge, the body as well as the bell. The decay is much shorter compared to standard cymbals. Due to a large number of holes, the stick impact seems to be louder than the cymbal itself. However, that fact does not mean players should limit its use to practicing. It can easily be utilized at a small acoustic gig (accompanied by a cajon or djembe) or as a stack element, which can produce some surprising sonic results.

When playing the Low Volume series cymbals, there is a noticeable difference in the feel when playing as the cymbal itself seems to be harder than a normal splash. Despite all the holes, the weight of this cymbal is comparable to a standard 10 “splash, which is probably due to a special alloy that, despite reducing the surface of the cymbal, does not reduce its weight to the same extent.

We recommend this cymbal to anyone who wants to practice at home or wants to experiment with sound, you can use this splash in combination with normal cymbals, thus creating amazing sounding stacks.
