On July 16th 2020, the drumming community was faced with yet another loss as Jamie Oldaker died at the age of 68. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native recorded and/or performed live with the likes of Bob Sieger, Leon Russell, Peter Frampton, Ace Frehley, Stephen Stills, Freddie King, The Gap Band. In 2006, he released Mad Dogs & Okies – a self-produced album celebrating the music and musicians of Oklahoma, which featured Eric Clapton, J. J. Cale, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill and Ronnie Dunn.
Most notably, Jamie Oldaker collaborated with Eric Clapton, having recorded several albums as a member of his band. Those releases include among others: 461 Ocean Boulevard (including the classic version of I Shot The Sheriff), EC Was Here, Slowhand, Behind The Sun (co-produced by Phil Collins) and 24 Nights (the blues side).
Mr. Oldaker became one of the first Sabian endorsers after the brand was created.
He had battled cancer in recent years.
Eric Clapton once explained to Tulsa World: “He has the best snare sound I’ve ever heard. He has the best restrained fills I’ve ever heard, and his bass drum is as solid as rock. He is unique, and the pocket is always perfect. The kind of man he is matches his drums.”
Peter Frampton reportedly heard one of Clapton’s songs featuring Oldaker and was determined to recruit him for his own band. In a statement for Tulsa World, he said:
“Jamie Oldaker has been my dear friend and brother for over 40 years. He was a very warm, caring, true friend with a gentle heart. He cared about us all almost more than he did himself. Most will know him as the drummer on Eric Clapton’s albums. His playing was unique; a laid-back style of drumming with an incredible feel. We traveled the world, played many wonderful shows and great recordings together. He was a much loved person and I will miss him for the rest of my time here. Love you, Jamie.”
