Some time ago, we received a parcel containing a Premier Genista drum kit. Already when unboxing the kits, it was clear we were in for some interesting experiences.
To hit on those drums, we invited a representative of the new generation of very promising Polish drummers, Mateusz Brzostowski. He is a graduate of the Karol Lipiński Music Academy in Wrocław, Poland. He collaborates or has collaborated with the likes of Liber, Kasia Wilk, Dominika Barabas, Mieczysław Szcześniak, donGuralesko, Mezo or Natalia Niemen. As a Premier sound lover, a Premier Elite Maple user and a great drummer, Mateusz turned out to be the right person to sit behind the drum kits we received from the brand’s distributor – the Music Info company.
Premier Genista GM20-25 Drum Kit
1. The test
The test was carried out in our own recording facility. The kit is comprised of two rack toms, a floor tom and a kick drum, which were fitted with Remo Emperor Clear and Remo Powerstroke 3 Clear heads (the producer did not try to save on the skins). During the test, Mateusz Brzostowski also used a 14″x5.5″ hammered brass Premier Modern Classic snare with a Remo Ambassador batter head and a Remo Diplomat resonance skin, along with Sabian Artisan cymbals, which will be the subject of a separate test. Our guest performed a beat to the Dominika Barabas track titled “Idiotka” (Idiot).

3. Product and sound
The Premier Genista kit instantly catches the eye of the beholder at first sight, already before listening to it. The magnificent Blaze Sparkle Lacquer finish adorned with the iconic “P” logo, the meticulously made bass drum hoops, the beautiful 100% American maple shells, the flawless bearing edges – all of it really is impressive. As if that were not enough, a buyer also gets die-cast claw hooks and kick drum legs, 2.3 mm triple flange hoops with the die-cast ISO mount, the excellent Roklok tom holders featuring memory locks, the classic Premier Diamond Chrome lugs, as well as two spare lugs with accompanying tuning rods.
Let us not forget the sound. The toms (Quick Toms, according to Premier’s terminology) guarantee full sustain with balanced attack, natural warmth and a lot of “fat” while the kick drum is “meaty”, punchy, with a lot of projection and low end. Makes you want to check out the 22″x18″ version along with the 16″x16″ floor tom (GM22-44).
Premier Genista drum kits come in maple and birch versions. The configurations for both materials are:
- 10″x8″, 12″x9″, 14″x14″, 20″x18″
- 10″x8″, 12″x9″, 16″x16″, 22″x18″
- 13″x10″, 16″x16″, 24″x18″
A matching 14″x6″ is also available. The kits are offered in the following finishes: Cherry Red Fade Lacquer (CRF), Purple Sparkle Fade Lacquer (PSF), Black Lacquer (BXL), Orange Sparkle (OSX) and Dark Walnut Fade (DWF).
4. Summary
We consider this to be a very good instrument, however, we think we should let Mateusz Brzostowski himself sum up the whole experience: “Despite the lack of an air hole in the resonance skin and a rather high tuning pitch, the kick drum presented an excellent sound – fat, with a lot of low end, punch and definition. We tuned the toms low and they sounded really fat, with lots of definition at the same time. They offer a wide range of dynamic response and don’t require dampening, in my opinion. This Premier Genista is a universal kit. I could characterize it’s sound as surprisingly American, modern pop, although it will certainly deliver also in such genres as jazz, funk, blues, rock, reggae and others.”
