Drummers whose work was recognized by Grammy Committee
GRAMMY® Awards were handed out during the 59th ceremony, which took place on February 12 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Let us concentrate on what is th emost improtant thing for us, i.e. the drumming aspect of the event. The big winners this year are Adele and David Bowie, who won five trophies each. Part of the success also belongs to the drummers who participated in the recording sessions for the album 25 and the hit song Hello by Adele (those are: Homer Steinweiss, Leo Taylor, Joey Waronker and Adele herself, who played the drums on the Grammy-winning track Helo) as well as David Bowie’s Blackstar album (Mark Guiliana). Other drummers who can now enjoy having won the most prestigious award in the music industry include the likes of the Jason ‘J.T.’ Thomas, Robert ‘Sput’ Searight, Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy), Josh Dun (Twenty One Pilots), Chris Adler along with Megadeth, Jared Champion (Cage The Elephant) or Emanuel Harrold for his performance on Gregory Potter’s latest album.
We should also note a nomination for Steve Gadd Band in the “Best Contemporary Instrumental Album”, which was ultimately won by Snarky Puppy.
One of the segments of the ceremony, called “In Memoriam“, honoured the great names the music industry has lost in the course of last year. While Cynthia Erivo and John Legend performed the The Beach Boys’ classic “God Only Knows”, photographs of all those figures from the music world were shon on screen. Two giants of the drumming world were included: Remo D. Belli (founder of the REMO company) and Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers Band drummer and co-founder).
We also must mention a wonderful Polish accent, i.e. composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki was awarded a trophy in the “Best Choral Performance” category.
